The Hair Growth Cycles
Before exploring the causes of hair loss, it’s helpful to understand the different phases of hair growth: anagen, catagen, and telogen.
The first phase of hair growth lasts between two to seven years. The length of this phase is directly related to the length of your hair. The longer your hair is in this phase, the longer your hair will be. For most people, about 80% of their hair is developed in this phase.
The second phase lasts about two weeks. The hair stops growing during this transitional period.
This resting phase lasts for about three months, and the follicles remain dormant.
During the recuperation period, new hair will begin entering the growing period. About 10% of your hair is in the telogen phase at any given time. At the end of this phase, the hair naturally sheds and is replaced by new growth.
Most Common Causes of Hair Loss
Pattern baldness, also called androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss. In men, this condition is typically caused by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). While this hormone is essential for the development of male sex characteristics, it is believed to play a significant role in causing hair loss. Studies have shown that DHT shrinks hair follicles, making it difficult to grow and maintain healthy hair.
While androgenic alopecia may have a similar genetic cause for men and women, the balding patterns differ. Men will typically see the front of their hairline recede at first. As thinning advances, the hairline moves further back and thinning of the crown may also occur. Women usually notice their part becoming wider with diffuse thinning on the top of the head.
Hormonal fluctuations can also cause hair loss. This may be induced by starting or stopping birth control pills, medical conditions, menopause, and taking certain medications. Women are particularly susceptible to hair loss from hormonal imbalances. Medical conditions such as PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) can cause women to have higher levels of androgens. These male hormones are known to cause excess body hair, acne, and hair loss in women. Conversely, excess estrogen can also be an issue. When there is a buildup of estrogen, the body can’t metabolize it fast enough, leading to problems like thinning hair.
Diet is a sometimes-overlooked cause of hair loss. If you’re experiencing thinning hair, it’s a good idea to get a blood test to check for any possible deficiencies. Iron deficiency anemia can inhibit the production of hemoglobin, which is crucial for healthy hair growth. Without enough hemoglobin, the body can’t optimally produce cells necessary for healthy hair and skin. As a result, more shedding occurs, and growth decreases.
This condition is common in women, especially those who have heavy menstrual periods. Hair loss caused by low iron typically looks like female pattern baldness, so it’s best to assess your nutritional levels before considering treatment options.
